There Has Never Been a Better Time to Buy a 7" Tablet

Phone and tablet SoC (system on a chip) processor technology advances at light speed nowadays, but technical advancement has also meant cheaper production. That, is why you can by a 7" tablet with quad core processing for less than $40 today.

What's up with this flood of new inexpensive tablets all of a sudden? A number of reasons really, but the biggest is the quad core processor and the GPU (graphics processing unit) or MP (multiple processor). Inexpensive quad core processors are capable of speeds up to 2 Ghz.

Just in time for the holidays, you can stuff stockings with a an amazing WiFi tablet to watch movies and stream video from NetFlix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, PBS, CBS, History, etc.

Chromecast to your TV, stream Netfix and Facetime or Hangout with front and rear cameras. Play games or download any of thousands of other apps from Google Play. All for less than $70!

BTC Flame

BTC Flame

The BTC Flame is an attractive tablet for the first time tablet owner. It packs a lot of value in it's little package with a 1.3Ghz Quad Core ARM Cortex A7 with 8GB of  RAM with support for 32 GB more on a microSD card. The Flame sports a mini HDMI port as well as a microUSB, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The 2 MP front and 3 MP rear cameras make the Flame a great little Facetime, Hangout, and YouTube tablet. 512MB of system RAM may limit the Flame to "first tablet" status, nonetheless it's list of features is impressive.

The Flame comes with Android 4.4 KitKat, Google Play and Zoodles, a kid safe zone software with parental controls pre-installed.

What first attracted me to the Flame was the "introductory offer" of $39.99, but I have to admit the UK Wildcat Blue (University of Kentucky) sure caught my eye. The tablet comes in white, and pink also. For you Cardinal Fans, there are a few of the 1.3Ghz Louisville Cardinal Red ones left too.

Visual Land Prestige Elite 7QS

Visual Land Prestige Elite

The Visual Land Prestige Elite 7QS is not just another pretty face. Powered by an All Winner A33 ARM Cortex-A7 Quad Core Processor (4x 1.3GHz), and a high-performance Quad Core Mali-400 GPU, the Prestige Elite 7QS delivers smooth and dynamic 3D graphics to it's1024x600 capacitive touch display.

With 1 GB of system RAM and 16 GB of onboard flash memory, and a microSDHC slot supporting 32 GB more, the 7QS can use more memory than most 7" Android tablets.

Front and rear facing cameras make the Prestige Elite a great tablet for Skype, Facetime, and Hangouts. The WiFi 802.11 b/g/n Prestige Elite has a microUSB 2.0, a DC and headphone jack. Disappointingly, the 7QS has no Bluetooth, but it has dual speakers and an audio jack so you can still enjoy tunes on the patio.

The coolest thing about the Visual Land Prestige Elite has to be the selection of lollipop candy colors. Quite appropriate for an Android 5.0 Lollipop tablet. At $59.99 - $69.99, this should be a popular tablet.

iDeaUSA 7

iDeaUSA 7

The iDeaUSA 7 has a lot going on for a $55.99 tablet. A 7", 178 degree viewing angle 1024x600 IPS display and a 1.3Ghz Quad Core processor are the base for this Android 4.4 KitKat tablet. 1 GB of system RAM, 8 GB of flash memory and up to 32 GB by way of a microSDHC slot.

Dual cameras make the iDeaUSA 7 great for video calling with Skype, Facetime or Google Hangouts. Of course there is a Google Play Pre-load of basic apps too.

NeuTab N7S Pro

NeuTab N7S Pro

The NeuTab NS7 Pro's Allwinner 1.2Ghz Quad Core processor it is a great performer. It also has a full 1GB of system ddr3 RAM, twice as much of many of the other's here. It's the only tablet here that shipped with Google Android 5.1 Lollipop, as this article was posted.

The 7" tablet comes with 8GB Nand Flash memory, and will support 32GB more with a microSD card. 7" The screen is an IPS 1024x600, with an 178 degree viewing angle. Rounding out the features of this impressive tablet are Bluetooth, a 2 MP front facing camera and a .3MP rear camera.

At the time of this article, The NeuTab N7S Pro was selling for $55.95. I expect it will be a bestseller too. NeuTab had one of the first sub $50 quad core 7" tablets, the KitKat version of the N7 Pro.

Amazon Fire

Amazon Fire

The Fire has a beautiful 7" IPS display (171 ppi / 1024 x 600) and a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with 1GB system RAM. 8GB of onboard storage can be expanded using up to 128GB microSD cards, the largest memory upgrade of any of the other tablets here. The rear camera is 2MP and there is a .3MP (vga) camera for Skype, Facetime or Hangouts.

The Fire runs Amazon's own Fire OS 5, an Android derivative. Of the differences between Fire OS and Android, the most important one is the fact that it will only run apps that come from the Amazon Underground or Amazon Free Time for Kids. It will not run apps from Google Play.

That doesn't mean the Fire isn't a great tablet. It is! At $49.99, ecosystem, shmeckosystem! I bought my Android tablet primarily for Kindle, the news and Chromecasting Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. Who's not already dealing with Amazon and Google anyway?

The Fire's warranty of 90 days may be a standard for most electronics, but it's still disappointing, especially when the near identical Fire Kids has a 2 year warranty

Amazon Fire Kids

Fire Kids

The Fire Kids is a Fire with a big rubber blue or pink protective bumper, but maybe the biggest difference is the warranty. The Fire Kids "No questions warranty is 2 years vs. the Fire's standard 90 day warranty. Makes Sense.

Access to 10,000 kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games with 1 year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited is also included. Although not under $70, the Fire Kids still may be a good deal, even at twice the price of the Fire, at $99.00.

Dragon Touch Y88X Plus

Dragon Touch Y88X Plus

The Dragon Touch Y88X Plus is a great deal for just $49.99! The Dragon Touch has a powerful 1.3GHz Allwinner A33 Quad Core Google, 512 GB of system RAM and 8 GB of Flash memory. Expand up to 32 GB of additional memory with a microSD card.

A 1024 x 600 IPS screen with 178 degrees of viewing make the Y88X Plus a great tablet for streaming YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video. It has dual cameras for Skype, Facetime and Hangouts.

The Dragon tablet is equipped with WiFi 802.11bgn and Bluetooth fr connectivity, great for movies on the patio with a Bluetooth speaker!

The Y88X comes with Android KitKat 4.4, but TabletExpress assured me that an upgrade to Lollipop 5.1 is available. As a matter of fact, you can get it here: http://www.tabletexpress.com/support/index/download/906

DeerBrook DB+

DeerBrook DB+
DeerBrook DB+

Last, but certainly not least with the fastest processor here, is the DeerBrook DB+. A 1.5GHz A33 Quad Core processor powers this 7" tablet. With 32GB of memory available through a MicroSD slot and 8GB storage built-in, you will have plenty of room for games and apps.

A G-Sensor and a multi-touch 1200x600 IPS display make the DB+ a great tablet for playing games or streaming video. Preinstalled, Google Play is a great place to find them too, with over 10,000 games and apps for Android KitKat 4.0

WiFi 802.11abg for surfing the intertubes, Facebooking, or video calling with Skype and the DB+'s front and rear cameras. Bluetooth for connecting speakers, keyboards, and more.

Available in 6 colors (Storm Black, Cloud White, Pretty Pink, Race Red, Sky Blue, Dark Blue). The best feature of the DeerBrook DB+? The price.  It's only $39.99!

To wrap up, any of these 7 inch tablets would make a great first or extra tablet. I don't think tablets will be getting any cheaper, but I have no doubt they will be getting more powerful, but for less than $70, there's really not much reason to put off buying a tablet.

Be sure to check out the larger tablets from these brands too, as well as the cases, keyboards and other accessories.
